Magnesium is essential to life.

It’s the 4th most abundant mineral in the body, and the first one to get depleted when your body is stressed. As soon as the body or mind becomes overtaxed, your circulatory system steals this calming mineral from back-up stores: your muscles and tissues. And because stress is so rampant in our on-the-go lifestyle, magnesium deficiency has become an absolute epidemic. In fact, a 2006 report from the World Health Organization estimated that 75% of adults consume a diet that is deficient in magnesium.

Several books have been published the last 10 years urging us to pay attention to this important topic, with my favorite being “The Magnesium Miracle” by Carolyn Dean MD. Dr. Dean had this to say regarding why so many doctors miss the warning signs:

“A serum test for magnesium is actually worse than ineffective, because a test result that is within normal limits lends a false sense of security about the status of the mineral in the body. It also explains why doctors don’t recognize magnesium deficiency; they assume serum magnesium levels are an accurate measure of all the magnesium in the body.” – Dr. Carolyn Dean

In other words, low magnesium levels are often missed due to the way labs test for it: with blood tests.

Blood tests do not yield accurate information about your magnesium stores, because the body controls the levels of blood magnesium very tightly. Dr. Dean says that if your blood magnesium drops even just a bit, you could have a heart attack. In order to prevent this, the body will rob all of the cells, tissues and the bones of magnesium to keep the blood constant. If you do a blood test, the cells could be completely empty, and you’ll still have normal levels come up on paper.

What’s worse is that magnesium is not stored in your blood in the first place. 99% of the magnesium in the body is already in the cells that get robbed, while only a mere 1% is circulating through your vessels to protect your heart.

As you can see, this is a very long list. That’s because magnesium is responsible for over 300 enzymatic processes in the body and brain. Without magnesium we could not produce energy, our muscles would be in a permanent state of contraction, and we could not adjust the levels of cholesterol produced and released into the blood stream. Magnesium is also one of the most common co-factors in the body. Its presence is crucial to:

  • Glucose and fat breakdown
  • Production of proteins, enzymes and antioxidants such as liver-detoxifying glutathione
  • Creation of DNA and RNA
  • Regulation of inflammation

Studies have shown that even DNA synthesis is slowed by insufficient magnesium. Magnesium not only stabilizes DNA structures, it also functions as a cofactor in the repair of DNA damage by environmental mutagens.

On top of all this, in addition to being a mineral, magnesium is also an electrolyte. Sports drinks (packed with sugar) contain electrolytes such as magnesium, potassium, and sodium because these important nutrients are sweat out during exercise.
