One of my favorite ways to quickly help people with menstrual pain is to teach them acupressure, a form of acupuncture you perform on yourself very easily using your own fingers.
Here are two quick ways you can use your own body to find relief from menstrual pain, fatigue, lower back pain and headaches – several of the things that can get you down during that time of the month!
1. LI4 “Hoku”🖐🏽 – (for delayed or scant menstruation, headaches, constipation and moving blood flow): This point is located in the webbing between the thumb and index finger at the highest spot of the muscle. LI4 works to move energy (Qi) and blood down through the body to restore normal menstruation, so it’s great to use this if your period is delayed and irregular. It’s so powerful at moving the blood that it is forbidden in pregnant women because its stimulation can cause premature contractions in the uterus. LI4 also helps with the constipation that may be present before your menstrual cycle begins, along with headaches. To use this point apply pressure in a circular motion, or apply steady pressure for 1 minute on/1 minute off.
2. B23 & B47 “Sea of Vitality”👊🏽 – (for relieving lower back pain, menstrual cramps, and fatigue): These points are located on each side of the lower back. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, problems with menstruation including cramps can in part be due to the kidney meridian being low in energy or warmth. Stimulating these points by laying flat on your back with your knees up and rocking back and forth rejuvenates the kidneys and can help relieve pain and fatigue. You can also lay on a bed in the same knees up position, with your fists palm down underneath your lower back so that your knuckles have steady pressure on the points.
